Sudha Kumar, M.S.

Vocalist Sudha Subbaraman (aka Sudha Kumar), is a versatile musician, originally from Mumbai.  Sudha will provides voice lessons with a holistic and vocal yoga based approach to bringing out the most authentic vocals and her repertoire covers Indian music and contemporary world music.

Sudha comes from a musical family with her earlier years rooted in Carnatic music.  She was inspired into music by her sister, Shanti Subbaraman. Later, she pursued training in Hindustani vocals with Guru Smt. Swati Panda for 15 years in accordance with Gwalior Gharana.

Currently, Sudha is a disciple of Vidushi Arati Ankalikar-Tikekar for the past 5 years.

Sudha has also received basic Dhrupad training from the Padmashri Gundecha Brothers.

Sudha is now a professional singer and music producer, actively creating original music, based on Indian classical music fused with contemporary elements, with several musicians in the music industry. She has lent her musical skills by performing several genres from classical, semi-classical to light contemporary in the Boston area.  She is also a senior fellow of IndianRaga since 2019 and has collaborated with other talented musicians to re-create Hindustani classical music in some ragas.

Sudha is also a certified Vocal coach and Vocal Yoga instructor using the patented Heather Lyle VocalYoga Method®️. She runs the SwaraYogaShala®️ school which offers private holistic voice lessons and music training for kids and adults.  Sudha was instrumental in re-creating the music for an inclusive-music project called “Olangal – Waves” which was performed by artists of all abilities and launched on Illayaraja’s music channel. With an avid interest in composing and directing, Sudha has also been directing concerts and choirs in the local area for several charitable causes like Ekal Vidyalaya and AdityaJyot Eye Foundation.

Sudha has an MS from Oregon State University and is a Structural Engineer by background. She is an assistant academic support teacher in the Acton Boxborough school district.
